Borealis provides a complex engine for distributed stream processing. Unlike DUP, which strives for simplicity in design and implementation especially of the runtime system, the Borealis runtime attempts to provide all of the features that a distributed system might require, such as availability (fault-tolerance) and dynamic load balancing. Application programs are written in C++ and must follow a particular event-driven style facilitated by a runtime library.
